Syngenta Canada and Syngenta US recently joined forces to celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights, in a cross-border event that brought together employees from across North America.
Hosted simultaneously at Syngenta offices in Guelph, Ontario and in Greensboro, North Carolina, with remote employees joining via Zoom, the celebration was organized by the Syngenta Asian Network – an Employee Resource Group dedicated to fostering cultural awareness and inclusion.
“This was the first event of its kind for Syngenta in North America, bringing together employees to celebrate one of the most widely observed festivals in South and Southeast Asia,” says Ravi Ramachandran, Head of R&D, Crop Protection Development, Canada, who was part of the organizing team. “It was great to collaborate and celebrate alongside our US colleagues who were instrumental in pulling together many elements.”
The event featured cultural dance performances and music played by an employee’s children, henna tattoos, Indian agriculture trivia, and authentic Indian cuisine.
Beyond the festivities, attendees gained valuable insights into agriculture in another part of the world. “It was a great opportunity for participants to learn about the role of agriculture in India’s cultural and economic history, and the growth opportunities it presents for Syngenta in the region,” adds Ramachandran.
Fellow organizer, Abhi Deora, CP Field Development Manager - Eastern Canada, notes: "the overwhelming response and enthusiastic participation from employees across North America reflect how deeply we value cultural diversity and foster a true sense of belonging at Syngenta.”
Alamin Bhimani, HSE Manager, adds: “It was pure joy to celebrate across borders – sharing history, food, and laughter, all while embracing Diwali’s timeless message that light always triumphs over darkness. Events like this remind us that diversity is one of our greatest strengths, bringing people closer together and enriching our culture.”
In the spirit of giving, attendees contributed non-perishable food donations in support of Syngenta Canada’s Zero Hunger Challenge, demonstrating how cultural celebration and community impact go hand in hand.
